“Mum, you didn’t have to come down here; we’re fine, and we’ll be fine,” Tobe said to his mother on the evening of her arrival. She scolded him a little, and then they had a chitchat.
It had been six months since Tobe and Tracy got back together, and they’ve been having a good time with fewer arguments since then.
It was 9 a.m. on a Saturday; Tobe was getting set to hit the gym, and Tracy was tickling him from behind. “Babe, stop it; I’m going to be late,” he said, but Tracy wouldn’t listen.
Then Tobe tried to push her away, and she slipped and fell. “Trace, Tracy! T! Please answer me,” he cried out, but Tracy was already unconscious from hitting her head on a hard surface.
The hospital
Tobe drove into the hospital compound at high speed, rushed out of the car, carried Tracy in his arms, and dashed into the Outpatient Department (OPD).
He had bloodstains on him and could barely speak, but the nurses on duty quickly came to his aid. They took Tracy from him, placed her on a stretcher, and hurried her into the emergency room. Tobe was pacing around, waiting anxiously for Chuks’ arrival.
“Bro, what happened? Calm down and talk to me,” Chuks said when he reached Tobe. Tobe moved closer, hugged him, and then broke down in tears. Chuks hugged him back, then asked, “Any word yet?” Tobe shook his head.
A scare
“Mr. Tobenna?” Both Tobe and Chuks rushed to meet the doctor. “How is she? How’s my wife?” Tobe asked anxiously. Chuks tapped his shoulder, urging him to calm down and listen to what the doctor had to say.
“She has regained consciousness and is responding to treatment. The baby is also doing fine,” the doctor said, addressing both men.
“Baby? What baby?” Tobe asked, grabbing the doctor’s robe.
“You didn’t know? She’s about seven weeks gone,” the doctor responded.
Tobe slowly sank to his knees, weeping with both hands on his head. Chuks squatted down beside him and held him.
“One of the nurses will direct you to your wife’s ward, Mr. Tobenna,” the doctor said before heading back to his office.
“Hello, Ma, everything is fine,” Chuks said as he answered Tobe’s mother’s call. “Bro, I’m turning off this phone. Your mom won’t stop calling, and Tracy’s mom won’t either,” Chuks said to Tobe.
“What did she say?” Tobe asked.
“She’s insisting on coming down here to take care of Tracy. Tracy’s mother is busy with campaign preparations, so she won’t be able to make it,” Chuks responded.
“Bro, if that woman comes down here, I’m moving to your house. I can’t deal with her drama. What if she had lost the baby?”
“Guy, unblock my chance of eating your mom’s delicious soups na! Oh boy, na wa for you. But seriously, I think it’s the right thing to do. You have work to focus on. Who would take care of your wife when you’re not around?” Chuks said.
“Guy, she’s pregnant, not sick, and it’s too early for anyone to babysit her. She’ll be fine; it’s not like she does any strenuous work,” Tobe replied.
“I know, but try telling your mom and in-laws that you’re leaving their pregnant baby all by herself,” Chuks teased, and they both laughed.
Arrival of a baby
“Mum, you didn’t have to come down here; we’re fine, and we’ll be fine,” Tobe said to his mother on the evening of her arrival. She scolded him a little, and then they had a chitchat.
Tracy spent most of her pregnancy in bed until delivery. Tobe’s mother and Tracy’s mother took turns traveling to their home to care for her. Sometimes, Tracy’s mother even brought along some of her domestic staff.
The house was full of drama, especially without Tracy in sight, but they all lived happily. Jaden, Tobe, and Tracy’s baby had changed their lives for good.
The end…
