Even in the midst of turmoil, Gbemisola managed to break a smile as he broke the news of his wife’s birth to his mother. “Mummy, ekaale ma, everything is fine, ma. Alice just had a baby, yes, ma, a baby girl.”
Gbemi’s mother went into praise, and one could tell that she was dancing around where she was. “Mummy, don’t dance too much; we have a problem.”
“Olohun ni maje (God forbid), this is a moment of rejoicing, not a problem. Is Alice fine, my grandchild nko? So then what could be the problem?”. Gebmi’s mother asked.
“Remember the girl you wanted me to marry before I went for my youth service? Well, she’s back.” They were both quiet for a while before Gbemi’s mother broke the silence.
“What have you done?” she asked. “Nothing, ma; she just won’t let go; I can’t lose my child; I don’t want any of this; Alice would never forgive me if she finds out.” He went on and on until he broke down in tears.
Ufure threatens Gbemi
“Mo n bo” (I’m coming), just hang in there, oh, and Gbemisola, keep an eye on my grandchild,” and then she hung up.
“You had a choice; you shouldn’t have indulged me but no, you educated spoilt kids always think you can get away with everything; now look at your life, right in my palm!” she barked as she made a squeeze and Gbemi grunted in pain as he held his shoulder, then fell on his knees, pleading with her. “If you want to punish anyone, it should be me; please, just leave my family out of this.”
Gbemi’s mother arrived at the hospital later that night; she didn’t say a word to anyone but instead, she brought out some charms from her bag and started some incantations in a strange language just as she got to the ward.
“Ufure! If you’re going to touch anyone in my family, you’d have to go through me first! Your father couldn’t; what makes you think you’re capable?” Gbemi’s mother held up a charm, blew some, sprinkled some, and even drank a few.
Death scare
“I’m sorry, Alice; we tried all we could but we lost her,” Efa said as he embraced Alice, who had lost control of herself. “I don’t think there was much we could have done, considering the situation.” Alice didn’t say a single word; she curled up in Efa’s arms and cried her eyes out.
Gbemi didn’t know how to react; he had fear in his eyes. He couldn’t even go close to his mom or Alice’s bed; he sat in a corner of the room and buried his head in between his thighs.
Stay tuned for Episode 5, the final episode where we see what becomes of Ufure and also find out whether Aice and Gbemi’s baby survived Ufure’s wrath.
