Haunted by his nightmares, Gbemi tossed and turned for nights on end. Alice, his wife, was at her wit’s end. She could not bear his shrieks and scratches in the dark.
Gbemi’s and Alice’s Bedroom
“Alice: Gbemi! Gbemisola Akinjibade! Wake up, this instant!”
Alice shook Gbemi violently on the third night of his ordeal.
“Gbemi: What’s wrong, babe?” He mumbled, barely opening one eye. Alice flung a shirt at him.
“Put this on and follow me. Now!” She snapped at him. Gbemi shrugged on the shirt, dragged himself out of bed, and trailed behind her.
The Living Room
“Sit.” She pointed to the couch across from her.
“Alice, what is this?” He groaned, “It’s almost 3 am.” He added.
“I don’t care. We’re not going anywhere until you spill the beans. What’s going on with you?”
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“You mean you don’t know? You’ve been thrashing and gasping in your sleep every night. It keeps me awake and worried sick.”
“Aw, my sweet wife. You stay up to watch me sleep. How adorable.” Gbemi joked.
“Don’t you dare mock me, Gbems. This is serious. You need your sleep, and so do I. I have work in the morning, too. Or do you think I just cook food for the Lagos touts all day?”
Alice glared at him. Gbemi got up from the couch, knelt before his wife, and took her hands.
“Listen, babe. I promise I’ll tell you everything when the baby comes. But for now, I need you to relax and take care of yourself and our little one. Can you do that for me?” He pleaded.
“You expect me to wait four months for an explanation? That’s not fair, Gbems.” Alice lowered her head in his hands.
“I’m scared for you, babe. And knowing you have a secret makes it worse.” Gbemi stroked her back and then carried her to the bedroom.
“Trust me, babe. Everything will be fine. You know I love you, right?” He whispered in her ear.
Weeks Later
After that night, Gbemi and Alice resumed their normal routines. Alice stopped asking questions or showing her concern. Gbemi started seeing the mysterious woman from his dreams everywhere he looked. It cost him his job.
“Babe, we need to figure this out. I can’t go on like this.”
Alice said as she comforted Gbemi, who was pacing around the room, two days after his suspension.
“What am I supposed to do, huh? You know how much this job means to me. How much I enjoy getting up every morning with a smile.” Gbemi ranted.
Alice tried to cheer him up.
“Think of it as a break, babe. We could go on a trip, if you want. Come on, handsome Gbems. Smile for me. You know I hate it when you’re down.”
Gbemi sat on the edge of the bed, pulled Alice’s leg toward him, and rubbed it.
“Babe, you know we can’t travel now. The baby could come any day. I’ll try to be more positive around you…(muffled words)”
Gbemi kept talking and talking, not realizing that Alice had fallen asleep.
