One of the trendy cultures in our world today is the “hustle culture”. Everyone is hustling and I feel that we could aptly rename the last few years as ‘the hustling years’.

But what does it mean to hustle? Man has been working since creation so why this new pattern of today? 

what is the difference between what we are doing today and what has been done before and how does this hustling culture impact our productivity and general well-being? 

In this article, we’ll dissect this hustle culture to know if it has positive impacts on our well-being or is leading our minds and journey to the realm of no return.

What Is Hustle Culture?

In simple terms, hustle culture is the glorification of overworking and sacrificing personal time and well-being for the sake of career success. 

 It is a pervasive attitude in today’s society, fueled by social media, the rise of the gig economy, and the pressure to constantly be productive.

Is Hustle Culture of Any Positive Impact?

Though the negative impacts of hustle culture outweigh the positive ones, some benefits have been tied to it.

Some people argue that hustle culture motivates people to work hard and achieve their goals.

However, this happens when the people involved are passionate about their work and are ready to put in the necessary efforts that lead to increased productivity, innovation, and creativity.

Another positive impact is that hustle culture helps people develop valuable skills and experience by pushing them out of their comfort zones.

The Negative Impact of Hustle Culture:

I. On Mental Health

Hustle culture has several negative effects on mental health. 

First, it promotes the idea that we need to be constantly working and productive to be successful, leading to chronic stress, which has lots of negative consequences for mental and physical health.

Again, hustle culture leads to anxiety, as we worry about not being good enough or working hard enough. This anxiety makes it difficult to focus and be productive.

Additionally, hustle culture leads to depression, as we feel overwhelmed and hopeless about our ability to achieve our goals. Depression makes it difficult to get out of bed in the morning and also leads to fatigue and changes in appetite.

Likewise, hustle culture leads to insomnia, as we have trouble falling or staying asleep because we are constantly worrying about work, thereby putting our health in danger. 

 II. On Physical Health

Hustle culture has many negative effects on physical health. When we don’t give our bodies adequate rest because we are hustling all the time, we run the risk of chronic fatigue. 

Likewise, stress from hustle culture leads to headaches, which is a major distraction that makes it difficult to focus and be productive at work.

 This stress can lead to muscle tension, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back, making it painful and difficult to sleep.

 Additionally, chronic stress from hustle culture can lead to high blood pressure, which poses the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious health problems. 

III. On Productivity and Creativity

Though superficially, hustle culture may seem like a good way to be more productive, it’s not. 

When we are constantly overworked and stressed, it is difficult to focus and be creative, leading to decreased productivity and poor-quality work.

In addition, hustle culture can lead to burnout, which can have a devastating impact on productivity. A study by Deloitte found that 77% of people have felt burned out at work and that 42% have quit because of it.

Burnout makes it difficult to concentrate, complete tasks, and meet deadlines. It can also lead to absenteeism and low job turnover.

How to Challenge Hustle Culture and Promote a More Sustainable Work-Life Balance

To challenge hustle culture and promote a more sustainable and healthy work-life balance, we need to set realistic expectations for ourselvesand realize that it is impossible to be productive all the time. 

We also need to learn to say noto extra work and commitments and not feel guilty about prioritizing our mental and physical health.

Ultimately, we need to take proper care of ourselves. Life has no duplicate, so it is important to make time for activities you enjoy and that help you relax. This could include spending time with loved ones, exercising, or reading.

In all sincerity, hustle culture is leading us towards burnout. And if living a healthy life is still our top priority, then we need to challenge this culture and promote a more sustainable and healthy work-life balance. 

This will benefit our mental and physical health, as well as our productivity and creativity.
